AI for Social Good: Guest Speaker Series

πŸ₯ Building Infectious Disease Preparedness and Combating AMR Using Explainable AI

πŸ—“ Date: 29th January 2025

πŸ‘€ Speaker: Dr. Tavpritesh Sethi (IIIT Delhi)

Dr. Tavpritesh Sethi

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is enhancing clinical decision-making using multimodal data. However, its application has largely been limited to imaging data. In this talk, I will showcase AI’s potential in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and high-risk Intensive Care settings. I will discuss barriers such as explainability and evaluation, proposing pathways for AI-enhanced health systems addressing global infectious diseases.

🌍 Applying Geospatial Machine Learning for Societal Impact: Devices, Satellites and Images

πŸ—“ Date: 5th February 2025

πŸ‘€ Speaker: Anupam Sobti (Assistant professor at Plaksha University)

Abstract

As artificial intelligence spreads its wings, it provides us an opportunity to tackle long standing societal problems by shortening the information gap – whether it’s information about the historical produce of a farm to a bank or declining condition of a road to your local municipal authority. In this talk, I will share examples and opportunities where machine learning based perception systems are being (or could be) used to provide economical and reliable information to the right users at the right time to address many challenges that arise in these socio-technical systems. We will discuss how these β€˜sentients’ could enthuse efficiency in data-driven decision making for policy makers as well as operational pipelines.

🌍 Future of Food: Addressing Food & Water Security with Machine Learning

πŸ—“ Date: 20th February 2025

πŸ‘€ Speaker: Alok (Google DeepMind)

Alok

Abstract

The global food system faces unprecedented challenges. In 2023, 2.4 billion people experienced moderate to severe food insecurity due to climate change and shifting diets. Agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating a shift toward sustainable practices.

πŸ“ˆ To feed a projected 9.6 billion people by 2050, the FAO estimates a 60% increase in food production. Machine learning can drive this transformation through digitization, precision monitoring, and data-driven decisions.
